Strategy and Tactic

Philipp and Julian Autenrieth: "The best tactic and strategy decide the outcome, while the boat and the conditions are more or less the same for everyone.  Whoever can make the best out of these conditions, wins."

“The Berliner Stefan Meister and Frank Thieme are going to Sydney. Boat and Sail, packed in shipping containers left Wednesday on the big trip. There, Stefan Meister and Frank Thieme will unpack their 470er jolle and will rigg her up for Olympia.” “It’s like a dream,” reflected Stefan Meister, the 29 year-old helmsman, “only a half a year ago, Olympia was really far away.” The Berlin duo were lucky as well as able. Two weeks before at the European Championship at Lake Garda, they received 6th place and narrowly qualified for the Olympics in the last moment. What makes this outcome so completely noteworthy? It was the fourth regatta they had raced together. “It is surprising that they made the qualification after to little time together,” praised national coach Jörg Lehmann, one of the most successful Flying-Dutchmen sailors from Schwerin. “Although, we knew Stefan is an accomplished sailor for a while. And Frank is a sailing maniac, a committed and experienced crewmember.” Klaus Wolf, Berliner Zeitung, June 28, 2000.

Frank Thieme (Potsdamer Yacht Club) is also the German champion in 470 and multiple German master in Korsar, with his helmswoman Uti Thieme. Tactical Sailing was allowed to use his extensive experience and gives you his tips for optimizing the velocity of a 470er.
