Strategy and Tactic

Philipp and Julian Autenrieth: "The best tactic and strategy decide the outcome, while the boat and the conditions are more or less the same for everyone.  Whoever can make the best out of these conditions, wins."

Chance and Risk

Cyrill: "Tactical Sailing is a great software to get a better understanding of the tactics involved in sailing. I use the software a lot in theory lessons. The great advantage is that it has games as well so sailors can try to beat another boat or sail the best time around a race course. All that with a variety of boats." In an interview with Tactical Sailing we discussed a very challenging topic: Opportunities and Risks for oscillating winds. A sailor is always challenged to make decisions, namely: When should I tack to reduce a risk?

Cyrill Auer

With the Tactical Sailing program and the "Coach´s Toolbox", I prepare theory lessons ... I look forward to the reactions of the kids.

I am fluent in German, French and English.
I have been sailing (born in 1982) as long as I can remember, racing whenever and whatever I could get my hands on. In the past years mostly keelboats. I got my first coaching degree 13 years ago and continuously enhanced my coaching education ever since. I have been involved in introducing and leading Opti programs for various sailing clubs and federations in Switzerland as well as abroad. I have founded optimist-academy.ch  in 2008 to provide independent coaching services. Now let’s get on the water and have some fun!!! C ya! Cyril

When should I tack?

First beat: When should I tack?

In an interview with Cyril we discussed the practical issues of Opti sailors, for example,
"When should I tack?"
His answers sound very obvious and he is using the "Coach´s Toolbox" to explain on a simulated scene the first beat. Cyrill shows the path sailed, the risk, the "best and worst case", when to tack. Cyril showed also several other scenes (see below) that you should know in theory, and later use for your benefit on the water much easier.

VMG has not overwhelmed the kids- 10 degree wind shifts are important

Cyril Auer- Opti Coach (SUI) says: The issue VMG was really a success! I will definitely repeat. VMG has not overwhelmed the kids and positive side-effect, they realized how important even just 5 or 10 degree wind shifts are.

Tactic disc VMG

The simulation of "Velocity Made Good (VMG)" will show you the practical way to more speed. However, the theoretical background is explained. Your advantage: Instead of remaining in the tackle hanging out in the downdrafts, you can optimize your boat speed and even get on the port tack a tactical advantage in the next turn by the right of way with wind from starboard. Your boat shows in the cockpit and on a tactical display the values (KN): Wind speed, boat speed and Velocity Made Good (VMG).
