Tactical Sailing enters Medal Race

"Your project has been selected out of more than 60 applicants to enter the second round of evaluation of the European Award for Technology Supported Learning - eureleA 2012!" This good news came in on 22.12.2011. Sailors would say: "We entered the Medal Race!"

The eureleA - European Award for Technology Supported Learning - is a contest to identify outstanding projects from the whole spectrum of technology supported learning and teaching. Since 2004 the winners of the eureleA have been made well known to the community as best practice examples. Read more about eureleA 2012.

Tactical Sailing

Summary of application:
Tactical Sailing is an interactive tactical learning and training game in which the entire course of a sailing regatta is simulated. Though the use of a beginner’s tutorial, the basic knowledge conveying learn-modules, and a toolbox for trainers, is possible to explain such a complex topic as strategy and tactics systematically, but still clearly. The internationally recognized American sailor, tactician, and author David Dellenbaugh (America’s Cup) gave us access to twenty of his Top Tips, which we integrated in animated Form into our educational computer game. The specific tips that we chose and present in audio-visual form increase the attention of students. Our Trainer Toolbox, developed especially for trainers and educators, has already been successfully integrated into theory instruction for young people not only in Europe, but worldwide.

It was our goal to create an action-packed “serious” game with a challenging topic but at the same time with a high educational and fun factor. We were able to take internationally recognized young sailors “on board” with us: the group of sailors who are enthusiastic about this game and its use in the sailing includes Philipp and Julian Autenrieth as former Opti- World Champions as well as Marvin Frisch, fifth place in the World Championship in 2010 and German Champion 2011 in Opti.

Dedicated teamwork, professional project management, compelling designs and perfect simulation technology are the factors for success that this project needed in order to communicate this complex educational topic playfully and clearly. The simulation of strategy and tactics in the regatta is a substitute for other complex scenarios. The design and layout visualize the “invisible” wind and tactical rules for the user. Hidden behind the clear design is an extremely complex model and sophisticated technical concept. Through this simulation it is possible to make the meaning and the complexity of the wind in regatta sport convincing and comprehensible.

The product Tactical Sailing- A Game Against the Wind has been available on the market since April 2011 as a CD- and a downloadable version. We have been receiving positive feedback and the best references from sailors and trainers from all over the world- from Finland over Portugal to Australia. The tactical and education game is available in German and English.
