Tactical Tips

The standard program includes a learning module with more than 40 tips to sail "Against the Wind" or "Boat Against Boat". The most popular tactical tips from David Dellenbaugh are presented as video-clips, e.g. the advantage of sailing the long tack first, or downwind and upwind tactics. Using tactics while sailing a race means knowing how to use the particular features of lay lines, the rules of the zones, overlapping, and the inside position of buoys on any course - from the Olympic trapeze to up and down. We use optimal angles to tack or to jibe and give tips on how to maneuver if you get a header, lift, or persistent shift. The program offers also simulated scenes to show the most important situations, when boats are meeting or crossing their way. When sailing against other boats, you have to know the "ISAF Right of Way Rules". Beginners can learn the basic rules in case you have "right of way" or if you have to "keep clear of other boats". David Dellenbaugh was the tactician and helmsman of the America-3 during the successful defense of the America’s Cup in 1992, as well as is a multiple international and U.S. Champion. David Dellenbaugh is the publisher, editor, and author of SPEED&Smarts. For many years he has written tips for successful regatta sailing. In the 100th issue he published the “Top 100 Tips”. Tactical Sailing software runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. A few Tactical Tips are also available on iOS and android.

Learning with Video Clips

Tactical Sailing uses many tips from this 100th newsletter. We simulate typical situations in regatta sailing in our audio-visual presentation and we use these tips. By doing this, we convey tactical knowledge for a successful “Game against the Wind”. The complete anniversary edition of SPEED&Smarts and all the other back issues of the newsletters can be ordered from him and you can also subscribe to the newsletter. See www.SpeedandSmarts.com.

World Sailing - Right of Way Rules

When sailing for pleasure - or racing against other boats, you have to know the "World Sailing - Right of Way Rules".
