The figure opposite with 11 positions of tactical decision situations on the regatta field apply to the courses upwind. These tactical decision situations should be learned and applied in order to sail successfully. We recommend discussing positions 1 to 11 theoretically together with a coach/sparring partner, evaluating the options for decision logically quite clearly according to the principle of "either/or" and also discussing the sensible compromises practically. The illustration shows a regatta course with 2 different wind directions (wind 0° or wind -15° from the left) with their respective fields. The fields are delimited by their leeward and windward approaches. The "long leg" of the leaning course is highlighted in red. Train the ability to make decisions on the regatta field, such as start phase, wind conditions, strategic-tactical manoeuvres risk assessment, attack-defence, right of way and power analysis. Strategic and tactical decisions in regatta sailing are made in a similar way to classic "risk management".
