The 11 tactical decisions on the regatta field for regatta sailors and coaches

The figure opposite with 11 positions of tactical decision situations on the regatta field apply to the courses upwind. These tactical decision situations should be learned and applied in order to sail successfully. We recommend discussing positions 1 to 11 theoretically together with a coach/sparring partner, evaluating the options for decision logically quite clearly according to the principle of "either/or" and also discussing the sensible compromises practically. The illustration shows a regatta course with 2 different wind directions (wind 0° or wind -15° from the left) with their respective fields. The fields are delimited by their leeward and windward approaches. The "long leg" of the leaning course is highlighted in red. Eleven points within the fields are indicated, which are explained in more detail in the Tool Bag. © Tilo Schnekenburger has described important explanations of the 11 positions on the regatta field on his website, which are quoted in the Tool Bag: "Spaces of strategic-tactical decisions in the regatta field".

Operating instructions

With one "click", the coach can repeatedly call up the simulation of a regatta scene as video clips (YouTube) and discuss it with the sailors. You can download operating instructions and screenshots here:

Train the ability to make decisions on the regatta field, such as start phase, wind conditions, strategic-tactical manoeuvres risk assessment, attack-defence, right of way and power analysis. Strategic and tactical decisions in regatta sailing are made in a similar way to classic "risk management". Already at the starting line, the sailor has to decide for the right or left side of the regatta field. Jochen Schumann, Germany's most successful sailor, agrees: "The physics of sailing permanently forces a clear decision."
In the Tactical Sailing program there is the "Coach's Toolbox" with over 100 exercises. From this toolbox collection we have put together a special "Tool Bag" for racing sailors. These exercises train the ability to make decisions, such as risk assessment and win-loss analysis. They serve the regatta sailor to prepare for cups and championships. With one "click", the coach can repeatedly call up the simulation of a regatta scene as video clips (YouTube) and discuss it with the sailors, e.g. tactical behaviour on the way to the finish line.

Train the ability to make decisions on the regatta field

Train the ability to make decisions on the racing field. A recommendation of tactical tips especially for regatta sailors and coaches. With one "click", the coach can repeatedly call up the simulation of a regatta scene as video clips (YouTube) and discuss it with the sailors. The special advantage of "tool bag" simulations: Boats and winds are all "in motion" instead of static images! It has been proven that this promotes attention and concentration when using the various animations. In the Tactical Sailing program there is the "Coach's Toolbox" with over 100 exercises. From this toolbox collection we have put together a special "Tool Bag" for regatta sailors.
