World Championship 470

World Champion 470 - Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth

We won the 470 World Championship in Israel in 2022!
Luise: "It feels magical ? Thank you to:
- @philipp_autenrieth_sailor, world's best crew ?? WORLD CHAMPION ???",
German 470 team ?? on the way to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris ??.
Philipp: "Winning the World Championship in an Olympic class has been a dream ever since I sailed Optimist. When I say thank you, it's almost impossible to name everyone, but I'd like to mention a few names that had a big impact:
- @luisewanser best helmswoman in the world ?,
- my brother Julian, with whom I successfully sailed 420s for 9 years,
- my friend Simon Diesch for 5 years of incredible hard work during our last campaign in the 470."
They won the world championship with 60 teams from 20 countries after a dominant performance already one day before the final.
Coach Steve Lovegrove, the British 470 Mixed coach, said: "They came through a year ago. Everything up to here has been preparation for this peak - the world championship. You can't expect a result like this but work hard for it. That has now been rewarded for the whole team."
Philipp always sailed as a crew, and together with his brother Julian they made it to the top in the 420 within two years, becoming German champions in 2008 and 2009. Simon Diesch won the 470 German Championship with Philipp in 2016, Philipp sums up: "The right tactics in the last race were decisive for our overall victory".

"UNAUFHALTSAM" - Speed advantage

Shifts and the gusts
Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth made an excellent start to the first to today’s two gold fleet races. For the first race the breeze was sub-10 knots, marginal trapezing occasionally building up to full power. The Germans have been fast all week and use that speed advantage to play the percentages in the middle of the race course. Working the shifts and the gusts to their advantage, GER 10 had already eked out a significant lead by the first windward mark and sailed away to a winning margin of more than a minute by the finish. For more about the World Championships go to https://2022worlds.470.org; written by Andy Rice.

With "yellow bibs and bare feet"
Excerpt from a report by Andy Rice: With "yellow bibs and bare feet", Germany will compete at the 470 World Championships in Sdot Yam, Israel. Luise Wanser was beaming all over her face when she was back on shore: "Philipp put it best this morning when he said, 'It's a perfect day to be world champion today'."
Philipp Autenrieth added: "We enjoyed the whole time on the water, it's a paradise here. We will remember this moment for the rest of our lives, and our time here in Sdot Yam."
Luise Wanser: "The welcome here was fantastic, from the sailing club and the kibbutz. They took care of us the whole week and helped us whenever we asked. It was my first time in Israel and I definitely want to come back." For more about the World Championships go to https://2022worlds.470.org; written by Andy Rice.

Order the Coach's Toolbox - available in 3 languages: Spanish, English and German

Order a Coach's Toolbox here in the online shop. Participants in the 2021 championship in Argentina - as now also for the 2023 championships in Spain and Greece - will be offered a Coach’s Toolbox. The idea for the Spanish language version came from Pablo Villar (ARG), who has been working intensively for years in Buenos Aires to promote young sailors. Pablo Villar:

  • "The Tactical Sailing Tool will certainly help sailors understand the reasons for tactical decisions and make them better tactical sailors!"

Coach's Tool Bag - a new innovative tool for tactical decision making

Strategic and tactical decisions in regatta sailing are made in a similar way to classic "risk management". Already at the starting line, the sailor has to decide on the right or left side of the Regatta area. Jochen Schumann, Germany's most successful sailor, agrees: "The physics of sailing constantly forces us to make a clear decision. " In the Tactical Sailing program there is the "Coach’s Toolbox" with over 100 exercises. From this toolbox collection we have put together a special "Tool Bag" for regatta sailors. With these exercises, the ability to make decisions is trained, such as risk assessment and gain-loss analysis. They serve the regatta sailor to prepare for cups and championships, such as:

  • 2023 Optimist World Championship Costa Brava - Spain,
  • 2023 Optimist European Championship Thessaloniki - Greek,
  • 2024 Optimist European Championship Carrara - Italy.

With one "click", the coach can repeatedly call up the simulation of a regatta scene as video clips (YouTube) and discuss it with the sailors, e.g. tactical behaviour on the way to the finish line. We are happy to provide  the new "Tool Bag" for all sailors.
