Sailing – especially regatta sailing – is a fascinating sport that requires not only mental and physical training but also fundamental knowledge of geometry. The central element in sailing is always the wind, which moves the boat.
The wind, its direction and strength, offer us the opportunity to shorten or lengthen the route to a destination.
In addition to the calculations, we want to illustrate to the skipper – also graphically – the shortening or lengthening of the route, as well as the "risk zones," by calculating "gained" or "lost" boat lengths and demonstrating the importance of carefully observing wind shifts. The following section focuses specifically on sailing "against" the wind.
As an example, "Optimist" boats with a length of 2.30 m and a tacking angle of 45° are used.
